PRICE 81.00 THE YEAR. -VOLUME XI; XENOIRISr. C, NOVEMBER 6, 1908. NO. 2. ELECTION RETURIJS; i ".i; t i ' REPUBLICAN VICTORY. Taft Reeled by Safe Majority Caldwell Republican by Small Margin. "ALMOST A "LAND-SLIDE."" The results of Tuesday's elec tion, show a greater Republics Tictory than the first figures indi cated. The Charlotte Observer of Wedesday, says: 'The returns constitue a univer sal surprise. At times during the campaign it appeared exceedingly probable that Mr. Bryan would be elected; for the past two weeks it was manifest to the intelligent and candid observer of events that the election would go to Mr. Taft un less something extraordinary oc curred to turn back the tide which had begun to run in his favor; but at no stage of the canlpaigo, up to its very end, had there appeared anything to fore-shadow the Re publican landslide which the re turns witness." Late advices show that Mr. Cowles is elected to Congress in this district over Uackett, by 375 to 500 majority and both parties are claiming the 5th and 10th dis tricts. It will probably take the official count to determine these. J. C. Sherrill is elected to the State Senate over J. Y. McCall by a small majority. The County vote is being can vassed as we close our forms. We therefore cannot give the official vote. It is conceeded to be Republican unless irregularities are found in the Globe vote which is being in vestigated. It is not probable that anything will be found. Taft gets at least 309 electoral votes which is 67 more than uec essary to elect. The State has gone Democjatic by about 35,000. Mr. Cox, the Republican candi date for Governor is well pleased at the result, as his party has made substantial gains. Our list of townships is as com plete as it is possible to get until the board of canvassers finishes its work. Lenoir.
